Quartz Mineral Specimens

Quartz is silicon oxide and one of the most abundant minerals of the earth's crust. Rock Crystal is the clear, colorless variety. The name originates with the Greek word "krystallos," meaning permanently frozen water, as rock crystal resembles ice and remains cold for a period of time in warm conditions. The word "quartz" possibly comes from the German word "quarz," the original meaning of which is unknown. The varieties of quartz are many, including amethyst, citrine, rock crystal, rose quartz, and smoky quartz. On this page is shown quartz from Arkansas and cactus quartz from the Magaliesberg Mountains, South Africa. Click on the photographs for a link to additional images of the quartz being offered by Texas Rock Shop.
