Amethyst Mineral Specimens
Quartz is silicon oxide and one of the most abundant minerals of the earth's crust. Amethyst is the purple gemstone variety of quartz, perhaps the best known member of the quartz family. The coloring of amethyst is due to impurities of iron or manganese compounds and results in hues of purple, including deep purple, light lilac, lavender, and mauve. The name amethyst comes from the Greek word "amethystos," meaning "not drunken," from a belief that amethyst prevented intoxication. The amethyst presented on this page comes from Brazil and Mexico.
