Benitoite Mineral Specimens
First discovered in 1906, this barium titanium silicate comes from the Diablo Range in San Benito County, California, for which it is named. Sometimes called "heavenly stone," benitoite is an exquisite blue color with a higher dispersion than diamond. It exhibits pleochroism, which means it shows different colors in different directions; a rich blue in the direction of the main crystal axis and almost colorless in vertical direction to the axis. It is associated with natrolite, a hydrated sodium aluminum silicate; rare black neptunite, a silicate of titanium, iron, and sodium; and rare joaquinite, a complex silicate of sodium, calcium, titanium, and iron.
