Pictures of Mazon Creek Fossils

Out of the Francis Creek Shale in Illinois come Mazon Creek Fossils, dated from the Pennsylvanian Period, 325 to 286 million years ago. This noted lagerstatten, located in northeastern Illinois, has yielded over 400 species of flora and 320 species of fauna. Contained within siderite concretions, both hard and soft tissues of animal and plant materials are preserved. This page exhibits examples of plant materials: Annularia, Neuropteris scheuchzeri, and Calamites species; and examples of animal materials: Essexella asherae and a Pecten.
