Petrified Palm Wood Cabochons

Petrified Palm Wood is a fossil of a woody plant preserved by permineralization, replacement of normal cells of the organic matter with silica or other mineral deposits. This colorful wood, genus Palmoxylon, from the Oligocene Epoch, 30 million years ago, is plentiful in many areas of Texas. These pieces of Petrified Palmwood have been cut en cabochon, shaped in a calibrated, convex form, or uncalibrated freeform design, and polished. Petrified Palmwood is the State Stone of Texas.
