Ammonite  - AM-uh-nites - early mollusks. - marine animals that had no vertebrae and a hard shell made from calcium. They were cephalopods. First found in the Devonian and thrived during the Mesozoic Era. Became extinct 65 million years ago and not found after the Cretaceous period.
